L ‘Obesity is a risk factor for health, typically, although not exclusive, the company called “welfare.” Obese is defined as an individual whose mass of fatty tissue is excessive and is able to be caused or aggravated by disease. Obesity in children is widespread in developed countries into groups of poor people. The figures are alarming: in fact, for children aged 6 to 12 years between 1976 and 1980 the obesity rate was 7% while, in the same age group from 1988 to 1994 was 12% and then move on to the tip 15% in 2000. Part of this increase is given to the weight of different form “normal” over the last thirty years. On the other hand also increased significantly the percentage of underweight children and adolescents. The regions most affected by this problem are mainly those of Southern Italy, so much so that in Naples there is a rate of 16.6%. Nowadays, however, obesity has become a problem worldwide, not only for developed countries but also for the most poor, a problem that causes health problems, social, and increased mortality. The number of obese people worldwide is alarming. The prevalence of cases is increasing both in the U.S. as in Europe. According to a study of NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) in the United States, 30% of adults over 20 years are obese. In the countries of South America the obesity problem is growing visibly, which is already a public health problem, while even in countries in the EU case, although in smaller proportion than in the U.S., are increasing in an exaggerated way .
It ‘important but not to be confused with obesity overweight. It can be considered overweight people with a BMI less than 30 (for women 28), but higher than the values that the Italian diet gives for thinness (22 for men and 20 for women). If the BMI exceeds 30 (28) we can speak of obesity. Very often today, the term obesity is used inappropriately to describe situations in which the index of BMI is less than 30 (see above).
