The Wright County Journal-Press, is our weekly community newspaper covering Buffalo and surrounding areas of Wright County. Rory Gavic earned the respect and friendship of a great many people while serving in the military. He served with distinction, and he was well liked.That’s perhaps why it was such a bitter shock when Rory joined a growing list of military service people who have taken their own lives.The problem has been in the news recently. The military is taking steps to address it and find ways to recognize depression and get help for those affected by it. Rory’s mother, Linda Sawatzke, and his step-father, Jim Sawatzke, traveled from their home near Buffalo to Hill Air Force Base in Utah for a memorial service on Nov. 18. Many other family members were there, as well. Rory had died a few days earlier in a beautiful setting that overlooks Great Salt Lake at a place called Antelope Island State Park.Linda said the turnout for the memorial service was huge. She was told other services at the base had not been attended by so many people.“He was well liked and well known in the military,” Linda said. Rory had not talked much about his accomplishments, but there were many. The memorial service pamphlet lists 16 awards and decorations, including an Army Commendation Medal and a USAF Combat Action Medal. He had served well during two deployments, one in Iraq from February 2007 to September 2007 and another in Pakistan from January 2009 to March 2009. He had entered the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Eagan High School in 2002. He excelled as a military working dog (MWD) handler. The Army Commendation Medal and the USAF Combat Action Medal were earned during the deployments to Iraq and Pakistan with a dog named Allan. Whether called upon for a bomb threat off base or a narcotics sweep at the gate, Staff Sergeant Rory Gavic and MWD Allan were always ready. They were vital members of their security unit.
