Description:
Snow in the forecast means snowshoeing, ice-skating, dog-sledding, and skiing, while in the South, sunny skies provide the perfect winter getaway. Spend the short winter days and long winter nights outdoors on America's Byways!
National Scenic Byways Online (NSBO) is the Internet development, website research, and online application support team for the National Scenic Byways program. Since 1996, NSBO has worked to support the four main purposes of the National Scenic Byways program, which are:
To market America's Byways
To provide Byway Community support
To publish FHWA information
To maintain an inventory of all byways in the U.S.
Most people become aware of National Scenic Byways Online through its most visible products, the two National Scenic Byways program websites:
http://www.byways.org (this website)
http://www.bywaysonline.org (the program support website)
Who's Involved
Several organizations have a hand in National Scenic Byways Online:
Federal Highway Administration: Located in Washington, DC, they run the National Scenic Byways Program and provide funding via discretionary grants for scenic byways projects.
Utah State University (USU): Located in Logan, UT, this is the home of National Scenic Byways Online. The University provides NSBO with facilities, equipment, project management, data acquisition, and research and development.
Multimedia Data Services Corporation (MDSC): Located in Logan, UT, they provide NSBO with software development, site operations and administration, and customer support.
America's Byways Resource Center (ABRC): Located in Duluth, MN, they maintain contact information and archives of past publications for the National Scenic Byways Program, as well as provide technical support for the Byway Community.
The staff of byways.org strive to gather and provide information on all designated byways in the United States. However, our focus is on America’s Byways, designated as National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.
Additional information on State-designated byways is welcome and will be included on the website as resources become available. Roads that may be “scenic” but are not recognized by State or federal agencies are not listed on byways.org. You are welcome to contact our website team if you are aware of missing or inaccurate information.
he byways.org site is funded by the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. Government policies prevent us from endorsing specific places of business along byways. However, if a place has significant interest to the traveler aside from its commercial pursuits, such as it being a historical site, then it may be listed on byways.org.
Our definition of “scenic” reaches beyond breathtaking vistas. All of America’s Byways(r) are “scenic,” representing the depth and breadth of scenery in America—natural and built panoramas; electrifying neon landscapes; ancient and modern history coming alive; native arts and culture; and scenes of friends, families and travelers sharing their stories.
